John Anderson, who ran the Gophers baseball program for more than four decades, will receive the 2027 ABCA/Wilson Lefty Gomez Award at the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame Banquet in Chicago on January 8, 2027, according to Gopher Athletics and the Minnesota News Network. The award goes to people who've made a significant impact on baseball at the local, national and international level.
Anderson took over the Gophers in fall 1981 at age 26, making him the youngest head baseball coach in the Big Ten at the time and the 13th head coach in program history. He stayed in the job until retiring after the 2024 season, finishing with a record of 1,390-1,021-3 — the most wins in both University of Minnesota and Big Ten history, and 20th all-time among Division I coaches, per the Minnesota News Network.
The résumé backing up the honor is long: 11 Big Ten regular-season titles, 10 Big Ten Tournament championships and 19 NCAA postseason appearances. In 2018, Anderson's Gophers hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2000 and advanced to the program's first-ever NCAA Super Regional. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times and ABCA Mideast Region Coach of the Year in 2004, 2010 and 2018.

Anderson was inducted into the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Gophers' "M" Club Hall of Fame in 2002, according to the Minnesota News Network. The Lefty Gomez Award will add another line to a career that already defined Big Ten baseball for a generation of Gophers fans.
